Bucks County Council consults on sites for waste disposal

11.21.29am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 11th Jul 2007

This month Bucks County Council is inviting comments from the public on its proposal to make four sites in the county "preferred areas" for the disposal of waste.

The sites are at Wapseys Wood in Gerrards Cross, Springfield Farm in Beaconsfield, Calvert, north west of Aylesbury and Aston Clinton, east of Aylesbury.

The Council plans to find alternatives to landfill for the disposal of waste. Landfill taxes and government targets to reduce landfill (with financial penalties for missing targets) will make landfill an increasing burden on the taxpayer as well as becoming unsustainable because of a lack of suitable sites.

Bucks Lib Dems support the drive to reduce landfill but Councillor Alan Oxley said "The consultation is being rushed. It should have started earlier bur the Tories wouldn't authorize sufficient publicity until the elections on May 3 were over"

Alternatives to landfill include composting organic waste and recovering electrical energy from waste by incinerating it.

The Council has decided to seek tenders from commercial waste management companies for schemes to incinerate the domestic refuse which it is responsible for disposing of. Commercial companies also handle much greater quantities of industrial and other waste which the Council is not responsible for.

If the four "preferred areas" are agreed, then waste management companies could apply for planning permission to build facilities for composting or incineration at any or all of the sites.
