Disillusioned Labour voters will choose Liberal Democrats in future4.10.46pm GMT Thu 11th Nov 2004
Beaconsfield Liberal Democrats were treated to an inspiring talk last Tuesday by Richard Allan MP who pointed to bright prospects for our party. Speaking in Beaconsfield Town Hall on November 9, the Sheffield Hallam MP told local activists that, unlike South Bucks, there are large swathes of the UK where the Liberal Democrats and the Labour party are the only two parties which matter. The Conservatives have been reduced to few or no elected representatives, he said. All over the country, Liberal Democrats have been impressing local people by their competence and hard work in local administration. As the electorate becomes disillusioned with Labour, it is naturally to the Liberal Democrats that people are turning as their obvious alternative choice. Richard told local activists that the party is poised to win more seats at the next general election, significantly more than the current 55 Westminster MPs. The Conservatives by contrast are stuck in the doldrums, doing no better in the opinion polls than they were at the time of their disastrous defeats in 1997 and 2001 even after trying three new leaders since John Major. In fact several prominent Conservative MPs will probably lose their seats at the next general election, including Theresa May in the next door constituency of Maidenhead, where Kathy Newbound is an excellent Liberal Democrat challenger.
